2017 Syrah Charles Smith

Charles Smith’s Boom-Boom red blend! Boom-Boom is one of his many funky bottle labels. The winemaker used three reds from the Walla Walla, WA area- Syrah, a touch of Viognier, and a pinch of Grenache. In 1984, the federal government designated this Walla Walla valley as an “American Viticultural Area” (AVA). Charles Smith Wineries became the fourth largest wine producer; he sold much of his label constellation for $120 million in 2016. But the winemaker/owner kept a few favorites. And, the Boom-Boom label in 2007, which has become a custom blend signature red wine. I think it’s a kick-butt buy for less than $20…. even with its screw top. Walla Walla varietals are full of flavor and juicy. This Syrah is well balanced: E-Z on the pallet. It starts spicy but mellows into black cherry. It is definitely a “drink it now” wine, but feel comfortable presenting to others. Boom-Boom pairs well with hearty foods such as lamb chops, smoked ham, B-B ribs and even Cajun shrimp pasta.
