2018 Zinfandel Freakshow Michael David Winery
DYK: There is a “Freakshow” going on in Lodi, CA? It’s been happening for decades at the Michael David winery. The winery features several various labels; each displaying Circus performers. Thus, their arty Freakshow labels including a special note, “Michael David joint”. So, here is a label is worth the price before ever opening: There’s too much fun gawking at the performers. Plus, the label’s theme is Fire. A ravenous woman is deep throating fire into the sky. Her stage is surrounded by fire. There are volcanic mountains erupting in the background. Of course, the onlookers are circus performers in their various specialties: a tattooed man and woman, strong man, circus animals dressed for their act, and the barker. The grand Freakshow occurs under a full, voyeuristic happy moon. When I held this bottle in hand, I asked, “Do I really want to drink this stuff?” Well, the wine comes from grapes grown on 800 acres, but are not estate quality. None-the-less, the wine maker takes great care in production. The Zin is aged 12 months in American oak. Later, transferred to ferment an additional 12 months on French oak. When opened, the wine gives off a pleasant nose of dark berry; there is a rich red color in pouring. It does show thin legs. Tasting begins with pomegranate. Dark chocolate along with spices follow. It finishes in light tannin. For less than twenty bucks, here is a drinkable, everyday Zinfandel.
