2017 Caricature Old Vine Zin
I bought a ticket on the taste train that runs to Lodi again. It is turning into a regular commute. I see myself as a diligent researcher trying to increase the sample size of a study group. There must be a Lodi Appellation that isn't as good as the last. So far, I haven't found that one. But I must keep looking.
I found the 2017 Caricature Old Vine Zinfandel looking funny in the midst of more serious labels. The slug line "Wines of character with great legs" served as a caption to the New Yorker style cartoon of old aristocrats with big bellies on skinny legs. The dark bottle had a black label with red letters. It was reaching out to the man buyer, not the woman buyer.
When I pulled the cork, the oaken, earthy fruit smell seemed anxious to meet me. Just from that smell, I knew what to expect before I poured a glass. Yes. It was a wine of character with great legs. The low tannin actually enhanced the dark fruit and oak.
It would probably go well with a nice cheese board, but I would pair it with another glass from the same bottle.
My Lodi Appellation research will continue.
