2017 Nice Marie Sean Minor Winery

Isn’t it fun to get surprised by a bottle of wine? • First was the price, under $25; • Then the cork, which is genuine cork for long shelf life; • Placed in a classic claret dark & heavy glass bottle, • and then the “S/M” signature label left a great deal to one’s imagination. Far too often, blends are an overreach, using some left-over piles of grapes, or too complicated. Sean Minor winery in Sonoma Coast, CA, got their blend right. Three top-of-the-line varietals come together for exciting tasting. The wine-maker started with 50% Merlot, added 25% Petite Sirah, and finished with 25% Zinfandel. In the mix, the Merlot gets lost behind the Zinfandel, which gives way for the Petite Sirah to finish; its really a nice wine to enjoy. The nose is all fruit. In tasting, there is Lambert Cherry and blueberry up front. Other tastings have plum as well as light vanilla. Here’s a California red that could be stored for years in a cellar. Open on any fun occasion. Take “Nice Marie” to a party or neighborhood gathering as a gift; you will not be embarrassed. Serve with lighter meals, rather than hearty/heavy dishes.
