2014 Rioja (Reserva) Campo Viejo Winery
How do you say red in Spanish? It’s “rojo” for male & “roja” for female. So will this Rioja be masculine or feminine? For sure, it is a red wine.
Campo Viejo winery is located in the Northern region of Spain, and their wine is a blend. The winemaker probably started with some Graciano, and began adding other varietals: Tempranillo and Mazuelo (or Carignan). All are hearty reds. Here is a fine Rioja that was aged 4 years. It is a mild red with a smooth finish. It has a fruity nose, and pours as a rich red. In tasting, plumb is up front. Later, there’s some clove with a bit of pepper. But it is not a bull fighter’s heavy, dark red wine like Monastrell. It will pair well with red meats and spicy dishes. I would not recommend taking this Rioja on a picnic or baseball game. Avoid spilling on white carpet, beige furniture, or your date’s party gown.
