2016 Xeres Sherry Palomino Fino bottled by Gonzalez Byass of Spain

Trying a Sherry was a new experience for me. I learned that drinkers of Sherry were on the up rise, especially Millennials. And yes, Sherry is a wine, white wines fortified. Then, I learned there are several different styles for one’s tasting experience. This “Fino” is a dry sherry and one of the milder styles. Because Sherry s fortified the alcohol content is higher than wines; this has 15%. To get the best possible tasting, I chilled the Sherry. In pouring, its mineral nose came the front. Color was as expected, a light golden yellow. Of course, there were heavy legs on the glass due to the higher alcohol content. Then tasting began. Straight sherry is much different from wines, even dessert wines. At first, there was sour cherry, which wasn’t too enjoyable. Later, the Sherry gave up green olive, a bit of lemon, and then…..whiskey. That was no surprise since Sherry is know as the whiskey of wines. The finish turned out as minerally and sharp. Did I enjoy trying Sherry? “Yes”; it was a fun experience, but my preference remains with quality wines. When having Sherry next time, it will be with foods, because having it as a solo drink probably is an acquired taste.
