2016 Estate Red Blend Hedges Family Estate Vineyard

This Washington State red blend is a witch’s brew. But there is no witch, who can twitch her nose, who could blend this one; it’s a great act that’s not a sitcom. The winemaker started with a Merlot base. & generally, Washington State estate Merlots are high quality. Then some Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Syrah, was added. To peek it a bit more, a touch of Cab Franc along with Petit Verdot went into the mix. Then, this witch’s brew added a few local varietals. The vineyards sit along two important Washington State geographical wine regions: Yakima and Walla Walla. The Red Mountains make for good grape growing along the Yakima River, with running into the Columbia River. When we toured the Yakima, Beluga Whale wine valley, we missed the Hedges family winery. The brew begins with mysterious deep red fruit and soft spices. Then, drinking gets serious with a bit of leather riding-crop. A satisfying sip of coffee emerges. Listen for the subtle cackle of soft vanilla, too. It’s a fun, satisfying blend that’s made for entertainment as well as simple enjoyment. The bottle comes with a genuine cork. The pour has strong deep red legs. Plus, it reasonably prices. I’m not “hedging any bets” on this ’16 Washington State red.
