2018 Cru Du Beaujolais Morgon Protegee

This “Cru Secret” Beaujolais was harvested in ’14, and then released on market in’18. It is a Provencal French red wine, a Gamay. This label identifies the varietal inside the bottle, and that stirs curiosity. Most French wines show the buyer a castle, a chateau, or a filed on the label. Generally, French wine labels do not identify the varietal inside. The back-side label simply reads “red wine”. The wine maker assumes a buyer will know which grape grows in the region of France. I.e. the buyer should know that Cabernet Sauvignon grows on the left bank of the Seine, while Merlot grows on the right bank… or is it the other way around? Well, those clever Brits have figured out a smarter, simpler way to game the system. They call all French red wines a “Claret”. The famous, slick secret agent, James Bond, always ordered a “claret”, when ordering wine. Any chilled fine red wine, served in an etched crystal glass would bring a smile on the lips of Pussy Galore. This ’18 Gamay is young. It has a fruity nose and light red color. It was a cute wine for a light evening’s conversation. There were hints of cherry and spice. It’s not a wine I would keep or cellar: drink it & forget it.
