2014 Sangiovese Avignonesi Winery

Here is an Italian wine that might cause confusion. It was produced in the Montepulciano region, Central Italy; it is from the Sangiovese grape. But Montepuliciano’s best known grape is “Montepulicano”, which is 2nd most planted & harvested grape. So, we have Sangiovese, Vino Nobile de Montepuliano, getting confused with Montepulciano, and both varietals being crushed into wine in Tuscany’s Montepuliciano Region. Well, this ’14 Savgiovese is swell, but it isn’t a classico Savgiovese. The color is a soft red with an earthy nose. It has nice legs; first taste is of black tea without any tea leaves to read….Then, other aromas surface: berry, prune, mocha, etc. The oak aging leaves a stout tannin finish. It is a drink now red wine, but it fits well with lots of food pairings: any Italian dish, many cheeses, barbecued beef, and even a huge pork shoulder roast.
