2013 Grenache Griffon Creek Vineyards

This bottle of Grenache was sleeping nicely on a shelf in my wine cellar. It remained there undisturbed for six years. Then, I decided its time had come on this summer’s day in June. I opened it, and then decanted the whole bottle. The color was a magnificent dark cherry red. The nose was heavy fruit/ cherry. Its genuine cork showed very little leaching, meaning this wine could have snoozed another several years. Then, I reminded my wife is was “wine time”. She glommed onto her Waterford crystal wine goblet. I got my big bowl Riedel crystal wine glass…. O.K. lets’ look at preferences. She prefers Waterford because of its solid crystal, beauteous cuts & embossing; I think she feels more regal holding it. I prefer Riedel because the crystal is quite thin, delicate, and gives clarity to wines’ color. Plus, its big bowl opens the wine better for me. And, she & I also disagree on cars, foods, clothing style, and room temperature, and art. We both are fans of red wines having cherry & plumb aromas/tastes. If you do like Bing cherries, the you would not like this Griffon Creek Grenache. We sat in our family room; we began our normal conversation about today’s stuff. We each began tasting and commenting about this estate wine. At first taste, we simply stared into our wine glasses. The taste was mostly Bing cherry, very bold. Soon, we found the cinnamon, and later there was a light lemon finish. I swirled mine around inside the Riedel… careful not to spill this red on our oatmeal colored couch. Note: my wife & I differ on what quantity of red wine I can spill in which part of the house. So, far, I haven’t learned her equation. The summer’s evening crept by as we talked and enjoyed this ’13 Grenache. Then, suddenly, the decanter was empty! She remarked, “I can’t believe you and I drank that whole bottle”. Well, I couldn’t believe I didn’t have another ’13 nor the ’10 Grenache, which we polished off months previously. We did it. This was a very fun evening for us; almost Shakespearean: As You Like It, or his Mid-Summer Night’s Dream.
