2014 Syrah Blend Matchbook Wines
2014 Syrah Blend Matchbook Wines Who would stick a burned piece of paper on a wine bottle? Matchbook did, and I had to look. The bottle was a Syrah blend from California. I grabbed it, took it home, chilled it, and then popped the cork…. Well, its inexpensive cost should have signaled a cheap, composition cork. The drinking experience was surprisingly good. (Not all drinking experiences are surprisingly good, right?) The winemaker claimed the 76% Syrah with the 24% Pettite Syrah were estate wines., which seemed a bit unusual. The nose was a pleasant leather;…you know, like your favorite work belt. 1st taste was ripe plumb, followed by berry. Deeper in, this red blend became blackberry, Mother earth, and spice. Its color remained dark red. It finished with a hearty, light oak tannin. Drink this Syrah. The composition cork is the “tell”. Besides that scorched label might catch fire and burn down your wine cellar.
