2015 Shiraz Layer Cake Vineyard

Australia produces and sells some darn good wines. And one might ask, “what makes a wine good?”… My dad used to make his own wine during prohibition and the Great Depression. He walked the woods gathering any wild grapes available; crushed the grapes; tossed ‘em into a wooded barrel, where he added well water, sugar, and yeast. Dad never bothered about bottling his ‘wine’. He just drank that alcoholic stuff. My guess is that the finest wines begin with great vine, and are planted in best possible soil, and a skilled wine maker works magic. This Shiraz is a good one: a mineral nose, fine legs as well as a deep, dark red color. The first taste is dark chocolate followed by spice. When drinking more, which was a pleasure, there was blackberry. The finish was smooth with light oak tannin. It has a screw top, which will let is store. The Shiraz is a drink it now, serve with beef, lamb, or pork, put a few bottles on a shelf, or gift at a party.
