2013 Domaine de Cause Malbec

“That’s sort of odd”, I said to myself, “A Malbec from France.” I know that French winemakers produce quite good wine. But a Malbec? Being curious, I’ll give it a shot. I took the bottle home and placed in my wine cooler for a few days. It had a genuine cork. When I uncorked it, there was the fun, popping sound. After pouring, swirling, the nose was fruity. Dark currant. This Malbec was a deep, rich ruby red. My first taste was raspberry. Later black liquorish and more currant followed. After these tastings, the Malbec went south. Heavy tannin kicked in; it was tart (note: not a Tart). It’s a good Malbec, but much too oaky finish. It is one of those lingering wines that clings to tongue and lips… sort of like a heavy Norton grape. Either drink it now, or keep it in your wine cellar. rating: 88
