2017 Pinot Noir A to Z Wineworks

Oregon began growing Pinot Noir grapes in the early 1960’s. The Willamette Valley became the hub of some of the finest Pinot’s. The elongated valley has six designated AVA’s (American Viticultural Area). Oregon’s coastal state bottles of Pinot Noir are quite tasty; these older vineyards produce more luxurious and expensive than customary grown grapes.

Due to Oregon’s wine’s popularity, small vineyards have cropped up almost everywhere: own 5 acres? Then plant some Pinot Noir vines.

AtoZ Wineworks connotes their wine as “The Essence of Oregon”. I assume they probably bought their grapes from any growers, wherever available. Their ’17 Pinot Noir does not approach the level of Oregon Estate Vineyards’ grown grapes. After trying some of this red wine, I would happily choose a good Merlot or Malbec over it.

The wine’s color was a clear, crisp red, as well as having legs along the glass. Its nose was definitely Pinot Noir barnyard. From here, in my opinion, the stuff fell off a cliff. First taste was of dry, sour red wine. I couldn’t find that appealing rich berry or dark cherry of an estate Pinot. Trying it became a disappointing task. Also, the bottle came with a twist-off cap, another “tell”.

Of Note: for Pinot Noir enthusiasts, put another sawbuck into the price; buy an estate bottle from a top-notch vineyard. Chill to 65°, open, pour, and enjoy.
