2016 Old Vine Chenin Blanc Waterbrook Winery
I bought this Chenin Blanc because the winemaker said it was “Old Vine” on the label.
Of course, the term “Old Vine” has no varietal identification and has no legal declared age for designation. However, Chenin Blanc produces long lived vines, and the Chenin Blanc grapes came from Yakima Valley, WA.
From curiosity, I served the Old Vine white wine with our Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. Dang! It was a perfect pairing. The wine's light golden color glistened through our Waterford Crystal, where wine glasses have smaller bowls. It’s nose of crisp apple matched sage in the dressing. Its fresh green apple, along with a ginger finish, laid well on the pallet with the hot, white turkey breast.
The most obvious problem happened when there was only one bottle: Gone in 60 seconds. Because vines are “old vine” doesn’t mean Chenin Blanc within some bottles is that good. On other occasions, I’ve gone through different Chenin Blanc labels, many were unremarkable. However, this winemaker from Walla Walla employed a different style for achieving a delicious white wine.
So, here is a limited production that is an “Icon”. It will pair well with fish or fowl; try it chilled on fine warm summer’s evening; gift it to a party’s host; store some for a while in your cellar.
