2015 Petit Verdot B. Leighton Olsen Brothers
Buyers get giggles from looking at some wine bottle labels. This label gives us a throwback to earlier eras, and here it looks like the company put their red wine in a paper bag. Maybe it’s a throwback to when some folks carried wine in a crumpled brown paper bag.
The bottle does sport a grocery bag-like label. It is printed in black magic marker script. Their single printed large thistle plant seals the deal. Of course, the back of the bottle’s label matches the style and script of its front’s character. The marketing theme brings smiles.
Well, things become more complicated when describing B. Leighton wines. It’s not the name, but it is who is an administrator in a Columbia River AVA. Several varietals are marketed under B. Leighton wines. These Petit Verdot grapes came from the Yakama Valley region, which has its own subregions. Further, virtually every production receives highly rated, positive reviews.
My tasting notes agree with the several reviews. Also, it is appropriate to distinguish this as a Yakama valley Petit Verdot. The wine starts with a floral nose. The pour is a rich, dark red. The first taste gave up dark plum, and then black berry. The more I tasted, the more aromas appeared: licorice, mineral, and smooth oak tannin.
The stuff is darned good. The winemaker placed the Yakama Petit Verdot into a sturdy dark “claret” bottle, using a genuine cork for a long shelf cellar life.
